How to play Chess Tactics Puzzles

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Chess Tactics Puzzles. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Look at what changes after your first action.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Controls

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Compare the situation with the worked example. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
