How to play 2048

Choose a round of 2048 and settle into its rules. Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Use the example below to understand a decision. Read the objective before making your first input. Look at what changes after your first action.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Move the board using an arrow key, swipe, or a direction button.
  2. Equal adjacent tiles combine once per move; their new value is added to your score.
  3. Keep an empty lane where possible. Undo reverses the most recent move.
  4. Use New round to begin with two tiles.

Controls

Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

A row containing 4, 0, 4, 0 can slide left and join into an 8. The empty cells between equal values do not block the merge. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

A swipe that leaves the board unchanged does not add a new tile. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.

Common questions

While reading the Guide, what is the goal of 2048?

The key detail is this: Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round.

While reading the Guide, how do I control 2048?

Keep this in mind: Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons.

For a quick reminder, what example helps explain 2048?

For clarity: Moving [2, 2, 2, 2] left produces [4, 4, 0, 0], not [8, 0, 0, 0]. Each tile merges at most once in that move.

On this playing page, what should I watch out for in 2048?
